Here we are, at the end of 2018. Only a few days to go until New Year’s Eve and, even if up until the last minute some of you will still be undecided as to what to do or where to go, the most important thing is to wear the right outfit for the occasion. Black and white: formal or informal, the dress code for the most glamorous night of the year is based on the classic white, grey and black neutrals of elegant shirts, tailored suits and garments made of precious fabrics that provide a touch of style. And so here are some ideas to inspire you.
If friends have invited you to their place for dinner, or you plan to go to a club or an open-air party our advice is to choose a comfortable, casual but chic outfit. You could wear a white shirt with a straight-point collar and a micro hound’s tooth patterned tie with a small knot coupled with grey and black chinos. Complete your outfit with a shiny black padded leather jacket, a man’s wardrobe staple, for a vintage rock look. Another possibility is to go without a tie, unbutton the collar and wear it with a pair of slim dark grey jeans and blazer or suit jacket. In this case choose a dark jacket with a shawl collar and not much lining so that you can wear a coat over it.
However, if you have an invitation to a restaurant or a stylish venue for dinner, where the context and atmosphere demand a bit more formality, choose a two-piece suit in the right fit, not too relaxed, with a clean cut in a soft, elegant fabric. A black standard-wale corduroy suit, for example, is perfect teamed with an elegant white buttoned-up shirt. Black patent brogues will give a shiny touch to the outfit.
Lastly, a look for the most formal event of the year: a grand gala dinner in a villa or a luxury hotel. An occasion where elegance is de rigueur, in fact, you are will be expected to be exceptionally classy and stylish. In this case black-tie, that is a dinner jacket, is the watchword. Opt for a classic black model, which must be worn with an elegant shirt: go for a white shirt with a wing-tip collar or dare to wear a black shirt with either a straight-point or spread collar, for a total black effect. In both cases, two accessories to make the outfit special are a must: a waistcoat and bow tie, and they absolutely must match the colour and fabric of the dinner jacket.
